About James Morrow
I’m James Morrow, an online A-Level Maths and Further Maths tutor working with students across the UK and internationally.
I specialise in helping students build confidence, think independently, and make sustained progress in A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics across Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI.
I’ve delivered more than 3000 hours of one-to-one, online tuition, UK and international.
Taught in schools across UK, experience as lead teacher for further maths A-level in sixth-forms

Teaching experience
Many students come to me feeling stuck, discouraged, or unsure how to approach the subject. A key part of my approach is helping them experience success early in a calm, supportive environment, so that confidence begins to build naturally.
From there, I gradually increase independence and challenge. The aim is not simply to prepare students for the next test, but to help them build the habits that matter most in A-Level Maths and Further Maths: strong foundations, effective checking and the ability to break down unfamiliar problems.

Academic and teaching background
- MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics from Imperial College London, graduating with a Strong First Class (81%) overall.
- PGCE in Secondary Education Mathematics from the University of Bristol, awarded with Distinction.
- A*A*A*A*a at A-Level in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
- Eliahou Dangoor Scholarship winner

My personal mathematical interests
My degree included a substantial amount of advanced mathematics, alongside applications to areas such as quantum field theory, general relativity and self-organised criticality.
My MSci project focused on modelling atrial fibrillation by simulating electrical activity across millions of hearts.
I proposed adding structured anisotropy to the damage between cells, providing an algorithm for building heart "plaque" in a given direction. Ultimately, this made the model more realistic, better predicting where the transition from healthy to diseased occurred. I also outlined how measures of signal complexity could act as early indicators of future instability.

Calm, supportive, and intellectually serious
My teaching style is calm, structured, and supportive. I think many students learn best when they feel safe enough to engage properly, make mistakes, ask questions freely, and enjoy the process a little.
Humour, trust, and clarity are not separate from progress — they help make progress possible.
When students feel more secure, they are better able to think clearly, take responsibility for their own learning, and develop the resilience needed for real mathematical problem-solving.
My aim is to help students become confident, independent mathematical thinkers who can approach new ideas with less anxiety and more control.

Interests
Outside teaching, I have strong academic interests in mathematics, computational simulation, and the study of complex systems.
I speak German to a high level (C1-advanced)
More generally, I enjoy reading and video games for their sense of immersion and escapism, as well as badminton and long-distance swimming. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, and visiting art galleries.
I think these interests matter because good teaching is not only about technical knowledge — it is also about curiosity, patience, perspective, and connecting with students as people.
